Dun Whinny got the 2015 season off to a magnificent start with the traditional Captain vs. Vice Captain match over the Kings course yesterday in stunning early spring sunshine.
The result was a resounding victory for the Captain with four and a half matches to a half and a total of 8 holes to the good on a total ‘holes up’ basis.
This was despite the heroic efforts of Messrs David Roxburgh and Alan Keeney. Having carded four birdies between them, but still staring defeat in the face, David launched a defiant 9 iron at the 16th green which pitched ten feet short and rolled into the cup for the fourth hole – in – one of his remarkable golfing career.
Unfortunately this made no difference at all to their implacable opponents Tony Curley and Darren Geyl who ran out winners by three holes.
In the other matches Mike Collier and Andy Barton overcame Richard Hally and Brent Cunningham, Keith Baillie and David Watt beat Paul Kelly and Ronnie McGinlay, Derek McLaughlan and Alan Bilsland defeated Sandy Grant and Dave Paterson and in the final match Mike Page and Mike Cantlay squeaked past Douglas Laing and Tony Moran, who was making a welcome comeback after a prolonged absence through injury.
It was a wonderful afternoon and the best possible way to usher in the 2015 season.
Next week we have a stableford on the newly re-opened Queens course so please get your name down on the list in the Dormy or advise your intention to play to Mike Page, Richard Hally or the duty starter David McLeod.
