The Dun Whinny competitive season got under way today Saturday 24 March with the traditional Captain v Vice Captain match.
Using a Pinehurst Foursomes format (with the team aggregate score to determine the winning side) Captain Andy Lothian and partner Clark Campbell got proceedings under way against Vice Captain David McLeod and Martin Super who was making a welcome come back.
McLeod and Super established a two shot advantage but this was quickly eroded by matches 2, 3, and 4, with the Mike Collier / Andy Harrower partnership scoring an excellent net 62 to leave the Captain’s team up by six shots with two matches to go.
Could Keith Stirling and Paul Kelly nail the match? No, as it turned out, as Tom Fleming and Eamond Murray bettered them by two shots to claw the difference back to four shots.
In the final match Robin Christie and David McCutcheon needed to beat Eddie Gibson and guest Paul Sinclair by five shots to turn the match around. Surely impossible! But no – that’s exactly what they did.
And so David McLeod led the Vice Captain team to the narrowest of victories by a total of 401 shots to the Captain’s 402.
A great start to Dun Whinny’s 2018 season.
