Dun Whinny is a small but very active golf club with a widely drawn membership and a modern and inclusive approach.
One of the key distinguishing features of the club is that the draw for almost all club competitions is done randomly. This means that new members do not have to arrange their own games (often difficult if they don’t know anyone) and will find that they soon get to meet other members and will become established within the club very quickly.
This policy underpins the culture of the club, which is based on a very friendly and inclusive environment. Applications from potential members may be supported by one or more existing members but do not need to be and the club welcomes all applications. Potential new members will usually be invited to play a round of golf with one or more committee members, which gives an opportunity to learn about the club and its ethos before membership is confirmed.
The club was formed in 1936 – the first at Gleneagles – and currently has a membership of about 90.
There is some form of competitive golf almost every weekend from March to October, usually on a Saturday morning. We play on all three courses and from a mixture of white and yellow tees. Competitions might be a stroke-play medal or a stableford and may involve playing for one of the club’s twenty or so trophies, some of which have been played for since the 1930’s. There is also a singles knockout that runs through the summer months, and the club championship in June. Many of the members join in the friendly bounce games every Tuesday and Thursday mornings throughout the year and the club also enjoys a full fixture list of matches against other clubs such as Panmure, Carnoustie, Glasgow, Bruntsfield and Blairgowrie.
During the winter there is a Saturday morning roll up and there are various winter stroke-play competitions and a four-ball match play event.
Whether your aim is to play weekly competitive golf or your preference is for friendly mid week events, Dun Whinny will provide ample opportunity to play your golf exactly as you wish.
Dun Whinny is also a very sociable club. One of the annual highlights is the Jubilee Trophy, which enables members to bring a guest for a magnificent day’s golf followed by dinner and prize-giving.
In November each year we host the annual dinner dance and prize-giving in the incomparable setting of the Gleneagles ballroom.
Most years will also see an organised away day - in recent years we have visited Crail, Luffness, Archerfield and Dumbarnie.
The club is run day to day by a council consisting of the Captain, who normally serves for two years, the Vice Captain, Club Secretary, Match Secretary, Golf Secretary, Treasurer and 2 further council members. All office holders and council members are subject to election by the members at the Annual General Meeting held in March each year.
