The Dun Whinny Council Members
Meet the Committee
Frank Johnson
Frank joined Dun Whinny in 2015 and was elected as Handicap Secretary in 2017. He was closely involved in two significant changes in his four years in this role, namely the switch to the new World Handicap System and also the transition from paper scorecards to the Scottish Golf app which has revolutionised the way Dun Whinny manages draws, scoring etc.
Having previously served as Club Secretary and Vice-Captain (2021-2022), Frank was subsequently elected to Captain in 2023.
Alongside these off-course distractions Frank enjoys playing in both our informal midweek golf and our Saturday competitions.
Club Captain
Iain Aitchison
Having returned to Dun Whinny around 2015 following some time away from golf, Iain feels like he had never been away.
Now being retired from a well travelled life in Oil & Gas, (he claims he doesnt look old enough)… Iain can’t think of a better way to spend his time, than catching up with his Dun Whinny friends on the course or in the Dormy afterwards.
Iain is always good company and enjoys many a laugh on his way around the course.
Iain was elected to the committee at our AGM in 2023.
Match Secretary
Daley Smith
Daley joined Dun Whinny back in early 2017 and is an active player in our Saturday competitions.
Although his handicap has progressively improved since joining, it took 5 years before he would win a competition, much to his annoyance when many other members are lucky enough to win a trophy in their first year or two.
Having joined the committee in 2021, he has since found himself to be regularly “nominated” as the person who should fix anything tech based – this has subsequently resulted in him launching the electronic fixture calendar, maintaining member communications on the SGU app and most recently upgrading the existing website.
At the 2023 AGM, Daley was elected as Vice-Captain and has taken over the reponsibilities for planning some of Dun Whinny’s marquee events, including the Jubilee Guest Day and the Annual Dinner and Prize-giving events.
Vice Captain
Ken Marshall
Ken joined Dun Whinny Golf Club back in January 2018 and quickly established himself as one of the most prolific members for playing under any weather conditions.
There is an ongoing joke amongst members that Ken gets the best value from his Gleneagles golf membership, regularly managing to play well over 200 rounds of golf per year.
Ken took over the Golf Secretary role in 2021 and is responsible for the running of all competitions and for keeping members updated with ongoing club news.
Golf Secretary
Aidan O’Carroll
Aidan became a member of Dun Whinny in 2001 and then had to transfer to London for work purposes until 2017. During that time he probably qualified as having effectively paid most per round played than any other member!
After returning to Scotland in 2017 he has been able to play more social and competitive golf , even if his handicap does not reflect any improvement!
He took on the role of Treasurer for the Club in 2019 and helps to ensure Dun Whinny’s finances remain in rude health.
Club Treasurer
Keith Stirling
Keith joined Dun Whinny in 2012 and was elected Club Secretary in 2023.
He looks at this as exemplary timing due to the transition to the World Handicap System having already been completed by his predecessors.
A strong advocate for the social aspect of the club he continues to promote the various Club matches with energy and enthusiasm and instigated the annual event between Dun Whinny Members and Gleneagles professionals.
A great thinker of the game, he’s a strong believer that the ‘wedges’ are the ‘scoring’ clubs. If only his five wedges could reflect an appropriate handicap......
Club Secretary
David Mitchell
David joined Dun Whinny in January 2022, having previously been a member at Dunblane. Inspired by the camaraderie, friendly atmosphere and competitive spirit that exists within DWGC, he quickly became a very active and enthusiastic participant.
(By his own admission) David’s golfing form is ‘streaky’ and he can visit most parts of the three stunning courses at Gleneagles during a typical season.
Nevertheless, he is always keen to play with fellow members in the sociable twice-weekly ‘roll-ups’ as well as the various club competitions and team matches.
David, who lives and works in Auchterarder, was elected to the committee in March 2024 and looks forward to making a meaningful contribution.
David Logie
David joined Dun Whinny in 2019.
Having retired from a career in financial services, he set out to improve his golf with the aim of becoming a Scratch golfer. A mere 7 years later he got there and remains there - at time of writing!
Whilst he plays competitively at a national level David, enjoys nothing more than the camaraderie of the weekly social games between members on the beautiful Gleneagles courses.
David joined the committee in 2021 with the role of ‘“Minister Without Portfolio” - aiming to put to use the knowledge gained as Golf Club Secretary at his previous club.
