Results: Autumn Meeting. Kings. Saturday September 21st.

Post Event News:

There were a lot of prizes to play for today with an opportunity for members to set a score in the third “Seasonal Meeting” of the year, with the event also doubling up as a monthly medal.

This means that there were two whisky tumblers, as well as the prized Duncrub Trophy and the Championship Cup being played for.

Conditions were challenging, with visibility being “less than favourable” due to fog.

Despite the challenging visibility, George Stubbs was able to post the best gross score of 76 and as such he’ll win a prized Dun Whinny - Whisky Tumbler! Ken Marshall will rue the bogeys that he made on the last three holes, as a par on any of these would have given him the win, due to having a slightly better back 9.

In the Net Competition, it was a tight leaderboard as there were 11 players all within 4 strokes of each other. Ken Marshall’s gross score put him in 3rd place on countback with a score of 69

Past Captain, Mike Page took second place (yet again on countback) despite being aided with 2 birdies on the back 9 (14 and 18) .

He would be pipped to the overall win by yet another Past Captain - Mike Collier who clinched the win (and the second whisky tumbler) with a birdie on the last.

Duncrub Trophy- Best 2 Gross Rounds from the Spring, Summer & Autumn Meetings

Jon Cooper had already posted 2 fantastic scores of 73 in both the Spring and Summer events but was unable to play in the Autumn event.

He would have been forgiven for taking an interest in his good friend David Logie’s score as David had also posted a 73 in the Spring event and would take the trophy if he could have bettered that number today.

Sadly for Mr Logie, the 3rd hole derailed his chances, as he found difficulty and failed to complete the hole, which would cause the dreaded “NR”…

Amazingly… David would immediately follow this up with an eagle on the 4th hole having holed out on his 2nd shot approach to the green. Surely a very rare occurrence on this notoriously difficult hole.

Further birdies on 8 and 16 must have left him wondering what could have been…

Congratulations on your first win Jon, you’ll take home one of the most prestigious and unique trophies that we have at Dun Whinny.

Championship Cup - Best 2 Net Rounds from the Spring, Summer & Autumn Meetings

On the day where the heavyweight championship of the boxing world would be fought for, we had different type of bout with the “Battle of the Dicksons”

This competition was an interesting affair with Kevin Dickson starting the day leading the standings with a 65 and 74 for a net 139. Kevin may have fancied his chances for the win after carding a net 73 today, which reduced his overall score by one.

However, Jonny Dickson was waiting in the wings having posted the best net score of 61 in the Spring meeting before making an NR on the Summer event.

He’d have to avoid serious mishaps today to take the win and produce a score of 76 or better to take the Cup.

Jonny would have a steady round and would indeed manage to stay out of danger to finish with a score of 74 and win with the slightest of buffers.

Congratulations on your first win Jonny, you’ll take home the oldest trophy Dun Whinny has, which was first awarded back in 1936.

So here we have it… Jon and Jonny with their first Dun Whinny wins on a day were Jonny needed to play but Jon didn’t!

Trophy Histories.

The Championship Cup First Played in 1936: This is the original trophy of the Club and presented to Dun Whinny by John C Dougal one of the instigators and founders of the Club. The cup is a beautiful trophy on a stem supported by three silver golf clubs and mounted on a plinth with silver bands recording the names of all the winners. The Trophy was initially presented for stroke play competition in the Spring Meeting of 1936. At the AGM in 1937 it was decided that this trophy should be named the "Club Championship Trophy" and would be awarded to the player with the aggregate of the two best net scores in the Spring, Summer and Autumn meetings. The qualification conditions for this trophy have never been changed since that date. The first winner of the trophy was Dennis Blanc who scored 72-1 = 71

The Duncrub Trophy First Played in 1976: In 1976 Lord Rollo expressed a wish to provide a trophy to the Club for scratch competition. The Council decided that as there was already trophy for handicap competition (the Championship Cup) this trophy should be awarded for the two best scratch scores in the Spring, Summer and Autumn meetings each year. The trophy is an unusual silver plated inkstand decorated with crossed golf clubs and two silver balls as ink wells and the whole supported on three small silver balls. The names initially were inscribed on the inkstand but when no space was left an attractive hardwood stand was made on which the trophy is mounted. Lord Rollo was one of Dun Whinny's many characters and in his later years only played golf if he could be first off the tee in the morning and played mostly with Ian Donaldson. The first winner of this trophy was R M Robertson.
