Crawford Rosebowl - Par Competition. 20/4/24
A record Dun Whinny field of 52 players turned up this morning to pay tribute to Jim Crawford and compete for the Crawford Roseball over the Queens. The weather was lovely, the course was in good condition and we all drunk a toast to Jim on the first tee which was kindly provided by Mike Cantlay.
It was really good that Anne Crawford was able to join us and hopefully she can join us again next year.
The event was a closely fought contest with the course winning all but 8 of the matches. Paul Lewis and Jonny Dickson managed a tie to set the early pace before Ross MacNish came in at One Up, a score which was later matched by David Watt and Mark Higham.
Jonathan Fletcher and Alan Penman moved the bar to 2 UP and looked to have won until Neil Lock in the penultimate group started with the 7 that guarantees victory and went on to play the rest of the round in a magnificent three under par to finish 4 UP and a worthy winner. Congratulations Neil.
17/4: Draw added.
From Mike Cantlay.
Saturday sees the return of the Par Competition on the Queens. Members will recall that Jim Crawford presented a magnificent engraved rose-bowl to the club last year for this competition. It’s adorned my mantle-piece over the last year and it’s the only competition both Al and I have won. As such, we’ve been consulting Frank and Daley as to how best we might mark the occasion. So in tribute to Jim, Anne has agreed to join us on the tee on Saturday morning for a wee dram and a toast to Jim as members tee-off. See you then! Mike.
From Ken: The format is matchplay v the course from the Yellow Tees. The course always makes a par and never concedes any putts so its quite difficult to beat. The person who is most up or least down over 18 holes is the winner. Scoring wise if you play as if it’s a stableford, picking up when you can’t score, then the app will keep score for you. Preferred lies are still applicable.
The draw will appear here on Wednesday evening. If you need to enter or withdraw after this then please let myself (Ken), David or Frank (if its on Friday) know.
