Result - JD Penny Shield. Queen’s. Sat 29th March

The Season Kicks Off in Style!

The 2025 Dun Whinny Championship season is officially underway, and what a start it was! The illustrious Alan Black wasted no time, striking the first blow of the season with his trademark flair.

The hotly contested and highly coveted JD Penny Shield was played under the dramatic skies of the majestic Queen’s course. Early risers were treated to dry conditions, but by midday, the heavens opened, giving many players the perfect excuse to show off their shiny new ‘Member’ Gleneagles umbrellas. A silver lining, perhaps?

Last year’s champion, David Mitchell, was spotted in the Dormy post-round, looking utterly inconsolable after failing to replicate his 2024 heroics. Some say they’ve never seen a wider smile on a man so “devastated.”

Now, for the big reveal… drum roll, please! On COUNTBACK, this year’s winner is none other than Mr. NEIL LOCK, who tied with Jonathon Fletcher on a superb NETT 66. Playing off scratch, Neil’s extraordinary 29 on the back nine sealed the deal, earning him the honour of taking home the glorious JD Penny Shield. Congratulations to Mr. Lock on a truly remarkable performance, and commiserations to Mr. Fletcher, who came oh-so-close.

Notable Highlights

  • Young powerhouse Andy McGill wowed the crowd with a jaw-dropping display of strength, hitting the green in two on the 7th.

  • Mr. Shand delivered a masterclass on the back nine, sinking two twos to the delight of his playing partners.

  • And in a moment of pure slapstick, I managed to cover both Mr. Frame and Mr. MacDonald in coffee at the end. Apologies, gentlemen—next round’s on me!

What’s Next?

The action continues next weekend with a Stableford competition on the PGA course - entries are now open via the app.

Here’s to another thrilling season ahead!
