Captains Prize
A record number of 43 members entered for this years Captains Prize, a stableford from the yellow tees on the Queens. We only had space for 40 but “fortunately” 6 people withdrew for various reasons including the captain himself who tested positive following his trip to America.
The course was in superb condition and the weather was dry, although it was very cold, especially to start with, and good scores were predicted despite some interesting pin positions.
First to post a decent score was Andrew Watson in the second group out returning 33 points. That held up for a while until Ian Aitchison showed a welcome return to form with 36 points together with David Mitchell who’s 38 points included two 2’s - (Alan Black and Patrick Elsmie also did this but didn’t get as many points). This new target was matched by Mike Cantlay who seemed more excited to have beaten his son Al by a shot than he was to be joint leader.
Douglas Hamilton looked to be heading for another Queens win but a poor finish left him on 35 points. This left only two people with a chance of winning, Eric Lambert and Alan Tarney who both had 34 points with 3 holes to go. Most of the large crowd who had gathered in the bar expected Eric to bottle it but he held his nerve with a par, par, bogey finish to get to 41 points.
This left Alan needing a 5 at the last to win on a countback. He was just beside the green in 3 and left himself an 8 footer to win but left it short and finished one shy with 40 points, unlucky!
So well done to Eric who started the season well but hasn’t shown any real form since. Another one with an excuse to go to the dance :)
Top scores as follows, full results are on the app.
Coming up we have our Autumn Meeting followed by the Medal Final, both on the Kings.
