Club Championship and Millennium Matchplay Stage. Results 25/6.

Report by Frank. The Club Championship final was played on the Kings in sunshine and with a gentle, but swirling, breeze between defending champion George Stubbs and David Logie.  David went 1 up at the 4th hole but this was cancelled out when George birdied the 6th and he then moved 1 up when he followed this up with a second birdie at the 8th.  His lead was short-lived as David birdied nine to leave the match all square at the turn.

David then went back in front at the 10th but George won the 12th to level the match.  The next few holes were pivotal.  George hit a superb second shot to about 3 or 4 feet at the 13th but his downhill birdie putt slipped by.  Although he followed this up with a birdie at the 14th he lost the hole when David holed a long putt for an eagle 2 to restore his 1 up lead.  George had a great chance to draw level at 15 but his short putt slid by the hole.

On the 17th David was first to putt and holed a tricky 20 foot downhill putt for yet another birdie.  George, from a similar distance and knowing that he needed a birdie from the fringe to take the match down the last, did exactly that.  The 18th was halved in par to leave David as the new club champion.

The fact that George just missed out on defending his title, despite having an under par round, illustrates the high quality of golf by both players.  Many congratulations to David on winning the club championship for the first time and commiserations to George who lost out by the narrowest of margins.
