DF Darroch Trophy. Queens, White Tees, Saturday October 12th.
Today’s DF Darroch Trophy on the Queens was interesting for a number of reasons:
The greens had been hollow tined and sanded, but were also very quick.
It rained heavily, then stopped, then rained some more, then it got sunny and warm, then it got windy, then it rained again….. typical Scottish weather really but it meant a delay or two and one third of the field decided not to play. This meant an easier than normal trophy for someone, albeit in challenging conditions. Some pics of these conditions are below:
We set off in two groups. An early group which started before the rain delay and a later group which was held back for about an hour as the course was starting to flood. Most of the best scores came from the early group despite conditions being slightly better for the later starters…….
Interestingly, the best score that anyone in the top 5 made at the first hole was a 6 with a couple opting for the 7 that normally guarantees victory, or in this case a tie for first.
Billy McNeill (the Z variant) equalled the best score on the front 9 but couldn’t keep it up on the back 9 and finished with 31 points.
Four players ended up tied on 32 points, Colin Campbell and Paul Wadsworth who both could have scored better, both scored 14/18 . Jonny (Sombrero) Dickson scored 13/19 and Rob Simpson shot 12/20. So, thanks to the best back nine today’s winner is Rob Simpson. Congratulatons Rob!
Next up we have our four ball better ball event, the McKelvie Trophy. This is also on the Queens and partnerships are drawn at random so its worth entering as you might play poorly but get a really good partner and win half a trophy.
Enter on the app as usual and talking of 4BBB don’t forget to enter the Winter Fourball KO on the app - you can choose your partner or leave it to us to fix you up.
This is your final chance to win an individual trophy this season and it’s a friendly stableford over the Queens. Enter via the app as usual and send any special requests to me. The draw will appear here later in the week. Ken Swa is defending and former member David Roxburgh will be joining us.
Trophy History: The D F Darroch Trophy first awarded in 1985: D F Darroch was the Honorary Secretary of Dun Whinny for some eight years and had been Captain and on Council for many prior to his resignation in 1986. During this time listed among the prizes was the Stuart Drysdale Prize. Stuart was a long standing member of Dun Whinny and had presented a prize for the best Stableford score from medal tees over the Queens Course which was a very popular event. He was forced to resign due to continuing eyesight problems and Fraser Darroch agreed to donate a trophy to maintain the continuity of this event and also as a gesture when he retired as Secretary at the 1986 AGM.
