McKelvie 4BBB Trophy. Queens, Yellow Tees, Saturday October 19th.

Our Group’s Tee Shots at the 2nd, guess how many twos we made.

An unexpectedly warm day was the reward for the 40 hopefuls who were playing for our final trophy of the year today. The competition was a Four Ball Better Ball event from the Yellow Tees over The Queens, which was in decent condition despite recent downpours.

First out of the blocks were Scott Williamson and Mike Page who were playing with Allister Wallace and Alastair Shand (aka the Als). They shot 63 and 64 respectively to set the standard. They were followed but last years winners Lambert and Fletcher who also shot a nett 63.

Next to challenge were Colin Campbell and Alan Black with another 63 and Tariq Ali and Ken Marshall with a 64. Both were eclipsed by serial winner Jonny Dickson and his replacement partner Neil Docherty who had kindly stepped in at the last minute as a sub for Iain Aitchison who had to pull out. They set a new target of nett 61.

Later scores of 64 Logie & Swa and Tulips & Watt came close with David L shooting his age again! This left only the last group to come and as often happens one pair also had a great score. Mark Nicolson and Christian Stewart managed a nett 62 to come within one shot of the leaders.

Congratulations to Jonny (yet again) and especially to Neil who wins his first Dun Whinny Trophy at his first attempt and joins a very elite group of members with a 100% winning record in a season. Feel free to comment if you know the other(s).

Tariq holing his putt for a two at the 13th, he also made one at the 17th!

Many of us enjoyed some refreshments in the bar afterwards and some even sampled these amazing looking burgers. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to try one as I still hope to squeeze into my Trews for the dinner dance in two weeks …..

Leaderboard tbc as one score is still outstanding.

Today’s victors, Neil Doherty and Jonny Dickson.

This two player team event is always popular and a fitting end to our season. Players are randomly teamed up with the best score at each hole counting as the team score. So if you are lucky and get a really good partner you might not have to be be at your best to secure half a trophy.

Enter on the app as usual and the draw will appear here later in the week - now below. NOTE that in order for the app to determine your better ball score everyone MUST complete their own card on the app, preferably with someone from the other team as your marker. This event is non counting but if you would like your individual score to count for your handicap then please let Iain Aitchison know.

In the event that we have an odd number then the player without a partner will use the card from last weeks winner, which was Rob Simpson.

Draw as above but as usual it will change. You are playing with your partner (1&2 and 3&4) are teams.

Trophy History: The George McKelvie Trophy first awarded in 2005. George McKelvie, a noted Consultant Surgeon, was a member of Dun Whinny for over 30 years during which time he served on Council and was Captain from 1987 to 1989. George was a keen golfer and serious competitor who railed against the Rules of Golf from time to time but was generally well liked by all the members. He took the function of being Captain seriously and under his guidance a number of changes were made to the running of the Club not least of which was the development of cyclical change to the Council by encouraging Council Members to stand down after two years thus allowing more members of the Club to become involved. His death is noted in the AGM minutes on 2005 along with a note of his bequest to the Club to purchase a trophy for a Better Ball Stroke Play Competition over the Queens Course from the front tees. Pairings were to be drawn among those members wishing to play. The bequest purchased a beautiful silver trophy which is a modern bowl shaped trophy mounted on a circular timber plinth with silver band. This was a bespoke design by Graham Stewart of Dunblane a noted silversmith
