Gordon Lockhart 36 Hole “Iron Man” Challenge. Saturday August 10th Kings and Queens.

The Queens 17th green from the Kings 18th Tee seemed an appropriate image for today….

This years “Iron Man” challenge took place in incredibly windy conditions for both rounds. The scoring on the Kings was better overall although conditions were the same all day so most people generally got worse as the day went on. This was especially true for Ken Marshall who played the first 9 holes in a gross 2 over par then got steadily worse and eventually failed to complete the second round….. he does get 15 Order of Merit points for his best of the day nett 70 in round one.

Also getting 15 OOM points is Alan Black. He bucked the trend and improved as the day went on scoring a best of the afternoon 69 on the Queens after a disappointing 80 on the Kings. This was enough to put him into second place overall, an agonizing ONE SHOT away from winning! Also ONE SHOT away from the trophy was defending champion Iain Aitchison who shot consistent rounds of 74 and 75.

The winner, who probably thinks he blew it, was actual Iron Man competitor James Hardy, his nett 71 on Kings was followed up by a 77 in the afternoon but this was just enough to win the event by a single shot.

Well done James for your first trophy as a Dun Whinny member. It will probably be the first of many and is also a great excuse to come to the prizegiving dance in November.

Next up we have our August Monthly Medal on the PGA next Saturday - enter via the app as usual.

This Saturday we play 18 holes on the Kings followed by 18 Holes on the Queens, both from the White Tees. The best Nett aggregate score from both rounds wins the Gordon Lockhart Trophy. If you would like to play but don’t fancy two rounds then feel free to enter either round although you obviously won’t be able to win anything.

The draws are below:

Re lunch please read the note below:

We’ve made arrangements with the team at the Dormy for players to receive a breakfast roll in the Dormy between rounds. On balance we felt that this would help with the pace of play for everyone, rather than having to wait on a meal being cooked over lunch time. If you are hungirer, we would suggest ordering a couple of rolls.

Please do make sure that you tell the host that you are part of the Dun Whinny group of players as there are staff that may not recognise all members and this will avoid any misunderstandings.

Please settle your bill before departing.

Recent winners of this prestigious trophy include: 2023 Iain Aitchison, 2022 David Logie, 2021 George Stubbs, 2021 Al Cantlay.

History: The Gordon Lockhart Trophy first played in 1978. This trophy which is a beautiful silver rose bowl was donated to the Club in 1978 by son of Gordon Lockhart who was the very first professional at Gleneagles. The trophy is one which Gordon Lockhart himself won in competition in 1912 at Turnberry and this fact is inscribed on the trophy. Gordon Lockhart had removed to Australia and the cup had been among Gordon Lockhart’s possessions when he died. His son thought it would be appropriate for the trophy to be donated to Dun Whinny and played for in competition decided by the Council. It was agreed that the cup should be awarded for a 36-hole competition played on the one day (originally a Wednesday, now a Saturday) and while it was recognized than that not all members would wish to play two rounds on the one day entries would be accepted from those who wished to play a single round and participate in a lunch organised between rounds for all players.
