Peter Miller 5 Club Wednesday May 3rd Updated 04/5/23

Tournament specialist Alastair Shand using a power trolley to carry his 5 clubs and George pretending he’s not with him :)

Our annual challenge to see who could shoot the best nett score with 5 clubs from the Back tees on the Queens took place yesterday. The weather was kind for a change but with no preferred lies, decent but bumpy greens and only 5 clubs it was never going to be easy. As with all of our midweek events you can play anytime and as usual we had a group teeing off in the morning and a similar group going off mid to late afternoon - for some reason no-one ever plays late morning or early afternoon but this is actually allowed….

As usual we had a couple of good scores in each section with Alastair Shand and Ken Marshall setting the pace with a nett 69 and 68 respectively then having to wait for about 9 hours to see if their scores held up.

The weather was similar throughout the day but only Stewart Lockhart managed to break 70 in the later group, his nett 68 tying for the lead but just losing out in a countback.

An unexpected early season win for me and already a reason to go to the dance in November :)

Result as above. This was a non counting event.

by Ron McKelvie: The Peter Miller Trophy first awarded in 1996. Peter Miller was a long standing member of Dun Whinny who served on Council and was Captain of the Club from 1984 to 1986. He died suddenly in 1993. His son Stewart Miller remains a member of the Club. Peter was born with a deformed left arm which nevertheless did not stop him from playing golf very effectively. There was not much that ever stopped Peter but he did need help with tying the laces of his golf shoes which I can remember doing on a number of occasions. At a meeting of Council in 1996 Richard Hally advised he had discussions with Stewart Miller regarding the offer of a prize in Memory of Peter for competition on the Queens Course. Peter particularly enjoyed playing the Queens course and specifically enjoyed the Five Club competition so it was felt appropriate that the trophy being donated should be awarded for that event.

PS: the above mentioned Stewart Miller is the defending champion having won this trophy in 2022.
