Stroke Play Round 2. Queens White Tees. Saturday June 29th.
Round two of this year’s Stroke Play Championship was played this morning in a tricky wind over the Queens which was in magnificent condition. Some interesting pin positions and thick rough added to the difficulty which made scoring quite difficult.
No-one broke 70 but we did have two 71’s from David Logie (who else) and Rory Bain which were closely followed by Jon Cooper’s 72. Best Nett was a superb 66 from Paul Lewis who pipped yours truly by a shot. Mark Nicolson and Richard Bateman also showed welcome returns to form with nett 69’s alongside Jon.
This leaves the overall situation as follows with one round on the Kings on September 7th remaining:
Incredibly only 11 players managed to complete both rounds but both competitions are still alive with Jon and David leading them both, the final round should be interesting.
Todays scores are below and we did have a “par of the day” competition. I couldn’t choose between the following:
Contender A: Tony Moran on the 15th. He hit his 5 wood tee shot into the bushes on the right so hit a provisional, with a 6 iron down the fairway. He then holed his wedge shot so decided not to look for his original ball.
Contender B: Andy Lothian on the 12th. He skied his drive, did the same with his second coming up well short. He then shanked his wedge to the green into the long grass to the right of the green, then pitched in….
Now that the excitement of the match play events has finished we return to normal with the Second Round of this year’s Stroke Play Championship over the Queens. Our Tee Times are 7.30 - 9.30 and the draw is below. Any changes or special requests please let me know. Thanks Ken.

Strokeplay Round 1. PGA White Tees. Saturday May 25th. — Dun Whinny Golf Club
History: The Stroke Play Trophy first awarded in 1984. In late 1983 there was some discussion at Council about changing the format of the Championship Cup (the original trophy of the Club) but it is clear from the minutes that this idea was not welcome and the result of the discussion at that time was the purchase of a new trophy by the Club to be called the Stroke Play Trophy. It was decided this would be a four round medal play trophy. For many years the trophy was played utilising medals on four consecutive months, two on the Kings and Two on the Queens. The best net aggregate was declared the winner. In recent years with the construction of the PGA Centenary Golf course the format of this has now been changed to three medal rounds one Kings, one Queens and one PGA. Again the winner is the member with the best net aggregate for the three rounds
The Scratch Stroke Play Trophy came into existence in 2020 when then Club Captain Andrew Lothian was delighted to have won the scratch section of the Stroke Play event only to discover there wasn’t a trophy for that….. he solved this by donating a lovely Claret Jug which has been awarded from 2021 onwards. Andy hasn’t won it…. yet!
