Updated: Presidents Platter Round 2 and Results. Queens, Wednesday July 3rd.
Much like the first round the weather was the major problem today with a tricky breeze and occasional showers making scoring tricky. First round leader and Millennium Champion Ken Marshall and was out early in conditions which warranted a waterproof jacket and a woolly hat (welcome to summer in Scotland!). He managed to par the front nine before falling apart on the back…. Despite this a decent target of 137 was set.
Next up a couple of the late morning starters took advantage of the best weather of the day to post some excellent scores. Newly crowned Club Champion and Order of Merit leader Neil Lock played all 18 holes in level par to match Ken’s nett 67 but with a total of 139 to put him into second place overall.
Keith Stirling, who wasn’t keen to play in the poor weather, was persuaded to wrap up and venture out and was rewarded with his best round of the year, possibly his life !!! a gross 76 nett 63. Unfortunately for him he didn’t play in the first round so couldn’t win the trophy but he does earn a nice haul of OOM points.
This left only the evening group in with a chance but shortly after they teed off it got windy again, then it rained a bit before getting even windier. I was at home having dinner and sipping some red wine and when I looked out of the window I felt really sorry for them….. but at least there was a rainbow to look at.
As it turned out there were a few great scores despite the weather….. Nigel Gallier added a 71 to his first round 71 to finish on 142 and Mark (always the bridesmaid) Higham shot 66 to finish in his usual spot on a total of 138!
So another trophy for yours truly. I must ask Alan Black for his advice on how to keep the streak going.
Next up we have the WRM Hally Stableford on the Kings this Saturday. There are still a few spaces so if you fancy it just let me know.
All the best scores from today plus the aggregate scores from both rounds are below:
The second and final round of this year’s Presidents Platter takes place this Wednesday from the Queens Yellow Tees. The draw, instructions, history and placings after round one are below. You can enter and withdraw via the app as usual but we will be using the Tee Booking system (also on the app) to make the draw so, when you enter, please make sure you select a Tee time, see Notes below:

Trophy History: The President’s Platter first awarded in 1978: In 1978 the minutes record The Secretary having received a call from J C Dougall the founding Captain of Dun Whinny enquiring whether he should consider resigning due to his increasing age. Council considered that in view of his being the original Founder Captain and also for his staunch support and generosity that he should be appointed the first Honorary President of Dun Whinny. This was a gesture which was much appreciated by Mr. Dougall who then presented a silver platter for competition to be called the Presidents Platter and the decision was that the competition be the best aggregate of net score over one round of the Kings and one round of the Queens courses played from the forward tees. It is worth noting that J C Dougall presented three trophies to the Club including the original Championship Cup in 1936
