Captain vs Vice Captain. Saturday April 8th PGA.
The weather for this morning’s rearranged Capt v Vice Captain match could not have been more different from that which caused this fixture to be postponed a month ago. In addition, we had what I believe is a record field for a Dun Whinny event with 44 players, including a couple who made it from their sick beds.
The match was the main event today and saw a game of two halves. The Captain’s team raced into a 4-0 lead which was followed by a rally as the VC’s team then won four and halved one of the next six matches leaving the match finely poised at 5.5 - 4.5 with one match to play. I’m pleased (and relieved) to report that experience pipped youth in the final match with Messrs Paterson and Cantlay Sr beating Messrs Grant and Cantlay Jr 1 Up resulting in a 6.5 - 4.5 victory for the Captain’s team. No prizes for the winning team although bragging rights are allowed for a period not exceeding 2 days!
We never keep things simple and some of you took on the additional challenge to record a team better ball score in your fours (using paper and pencil) and some also submitted pairs better ball scores on the app. In these side events I can report that:
Match 8 (Crockart, McColgan, Marshall and G Stewart) recorded a fine net 60 and won a bottle of wine each just pipping Match 6 (Lewis, Stirling, Bateman and J Stewart) on countback
Not to be denied a prize Paul Lewis and Keith Stirling won the pairs betterball with 42 points beating Andrew Watson and Alistair Shand on countback. I’m sure they’ll enjoy their selection pack of Cadburys Crème Eggs this Easter weekend.
Daley and I would like to thank you for turning out in such great numbers this morning and for making this early season informal match a tremendous success.
Next up on Sat 15th April is Round 1 of the two-round Princes Pot when we are back on the PGA yellow tees playing a conventional individual Stableford format …..without any added complications! Please keep checking the News section of the website for the Draw which will be published during the week.
Well played all and happy Easter
Frank
We are planning to run several competitions here:
The Main Event is the Captains Team (names on the left) vs the Vice Captains Team (names on the right). This will be normal 4 ball better ball matchplay, i.e. take the best nett score from each pair, 90% of course handicap, strokes taken from the lowest handicap. All we need here is the result which you can write on the card mentioned below.
Team Best Ball: take the best nett score from the group (all 4 players) at each hole and write it on a scorecard (along with your team). The team with the lowest score wins and the rumour is that each of the 4 ball will receive a bottle a wine.
Better Ball Stableford: this is optional but to test the app each pair can compete in a 4BBB stableford. For this we need both players in the team of 2 to enter their own gross score into the app (and have it verified by a playing partner on the app, just as you would in a normal round). The app will then work out your better ball score. The winners will each receive a Cadbury’s Cream Egg.
Results from the app as below:
