JD Penny Shield. Queens. Saturday April 1st 2023.
37 players took to the Queens course this morning to compete for the “biggest” trophy in the club. The weather was kind, the course was in reasonable condition and expectations were high.
Early nett 69’s by Eric and yours truly were soon overtaken by Jim’s 68 then Frank and Alistair’s 67’s although Franks should have been better. Apparently he panicked about what Jan would say if he brought home the trophy and blew his finish…
Ewan then set a proper target of 63. A decent 68 by Jonathan and a gross 71, nett 66 from Andy (without any birdies) failed to match it and Ewan added the JD Penny Shield to whatever it was he won a few weeks ago in the Pinehurst.
Congratulations to the team at the academy for the amazing work they have done making Ewan into a golfer and expect him to feature a lot on leaderboards this year.
Well done to EVERYONE for managing to master the new app. Its actually pretty easy to use and will only get better with time as more functionality is added.
Next up we have the re-arranged Captain vs Vice Captain match over the PGA next Saturday and there is a rumour going around that there might be some bottles of wine up for grabs. You can enter via the app and a draw will appear here later in the week.
Entry, draw and result info will appear here in due course so please check back regularly. There is also a club tradition for this competition that members wear their loudest outfits in memory of the great man :)
Provisional draw as follows, there are still a few spots left and you should be able to view your tee time and add it to your calendar under Tee Bookings on the app. NOTE: You do this under the Dashboard, Bookings Tab NOT the Tee Bookings Tab.
Just a reminder that your scorecard will appear in the Scorecard Tab on the day. Just click on it, choose who you are marking for and off you go. If you don’t manage to finish a hole click the … button and choose an option. I have set the max score to a 9.
Finally, we have a full field, playing stroke play in fours so please try to play as quickly as possible and stay in touch with the group ahead. Have Fun!
On Saturday April 1st we play for our first trophy of the season. The format is a Medal over the Queens Yellow tees and the history of it is as follows:
James D Penny Shield first played in 1981 In 1980 the Club Minutes report that communication had been made with Mrs. Penny regarding the type of competition which should be instigated as a memorial to the late James D Penny who had been the Secretary of Dun Whinny for some 40+ years and who died in 1977. The trophy is awarded for the best net score from the front tees of the Queens course. At this time the Club was in contact with Churchill Park Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia with a view to arranging hospitality and golf with a party of their members on a visit to Gleneagles in 1981. Historically Dun Whinny had played an annual match with Churchill Park with teams drawn and a Stableford match played on the same day in each country and the results were then telexed back and forth between the Clubs. In 1981 a party of 30 members of Churchill Park accompanied by 25 wives visited Gleneagles and the match for the first time was held head to head. During this visit Dun Whinny was presented with a new trophy which was then named the James D Penny Memorial Trophy and this was accepted on behalf of the Club by Gillian Penny – James Penny’s daughter. The trophy itself is sheet of beaten copper depicting the Churchill Park Club badge and is mounted in a hardwood frame and is designed to be hung on a wall. The trophy has some historical significance to Dun Whinny but is one which members have all said they have difficulty in accommodating due to its size.
