Captains Prize Stableford Result.
This years Captain’s Prize took place on the Queens this morning in perfect scoring conditions. The “random” draw had thrown up some interesting groups with 3 really slow players out first, the Captain paired with two ex captains, the Stewart clan (pictured above) all playing together, the leaders in this years Order of Merit playing together and the three lowest handicaps also in the same group.
Defending champion and self proclaimed hot favourite Eric was out early but failed to impress and was easily outplayed by both of his playing partners, Jonathan Fletcher and Alastair Shand, who both set an early target of 37 points.
This score held until Alan Black (yes him again…) came in with 38 points to pip them by one. His score was matched late on by Keith Stirling but his back nine let him down and Alan added another trophy, a book and a dozen golf balls to his haul. He also skips ahead of his playing partners into the lead of this year’s Order of Merit. Iain and David were last seen collecting money to send Alan off on an Autumn holiday to prevent him playing in any more events.
I had 2 volunteers to do this weeks report, Alan sent in, “Please refer to last weeks report again” while Eric submitted “Ok I was rubbish and didn’t win again….”
Well done to Alan, he will definitely have a single figure handicap tomorrow and the rumours that another Gleneagles club have offered us a substantial sum to transfer him are unfortunately not true!
In other news we got Frank drunk and discovered that his Trump style report was a result of losing a bet to Andy and Mike.
Colin Campbell, the Alan Black of our match play events, informed us that the dates for his singles and doubles finals are:
Singles, Tuesday September 26th vs David Logie and Foursomes, with Paul Lewis vs Tony Moran and Mike Collier October 1st. Both at 1pm.
Next up we have our Autumn Meeting on the Kings this Saturday and with the best two scores from the three meetings counting both the Scratch and Handicap trophies are very much up for grabs.
This years Captains Prize event will take place on the Queens this Saturday. It is a stableford from the yellow tees with the winner receiving the Eagle Trophy and a prize donated by Frank. Tee times are from 8am until 9.30am and several people will be staying on for a few drinks afterwards. If you would prefer an early or late start then please let me know before Thursday afternoon. The draw will appear here on Thursday evening.
History: The Captains Prize first awarded in 1984. The current trophy first played for in 1984 is a brass eagle mounted on a wooden plinth. This was presented by Ian Bayne the Captain of Dun Whinny from 1983 to 1985. The format varies but was originally declared to be a Stableford competition with full handicap from the yellow tees of the Queens course. The trophy was usually accompanied by some small token or gift from the Captain. The Captains prize as such has been in existence in the Club since at least 1949 but it was usually a gift such as a pewter tankard purchased by the Captain at that time.
