McKelvie Four Ball Better Ball Trophy

We played for the McKelvie Trophy on the Queens from the yellow tees this morning. This is a team event played in teams of two, the team score is the best nett score on each hole so it’s an opportunity to play attacking golf and the scores are normally quite low despite only getting 85% of your course handicap.

The weather forecast was terrible, rain with moderate winds, but after a few holes the rain stopped, the course dried out and it actually turned into quite a nice morning.

First out and setting the pace in terms of time and scores were the dream teams of Paul Kelly/Mike Cantlay and Paul Lewis/Colin Campbell. Paul and Mike carded a solid two under but defending champion Colin with his new partner Paul returned a 5 under total to set a stiff target despite hitting his drive at the 9th into the tee marker and finishing up behind him…..

Playing in the third group I needed to hole my sand wedge at the 18th to tie but it lipped out to leave Jim and myself at 4 under. Captain Mike and Allister also fell one short but finished one ahead of playing partners David and Kevin. David Logie and Jonathan Fletcher looked to be on course to challenge but a poor finish also left them at 3 under.

This left nobody with a chance of beating Colin and Paul but strange things started happening to the leaderboard when Aitchison/Gray, Mitchell/Kinnear finished. The app expected the first named in the group to do the scoring but Iain hadn’t brought his phone. David scored instead and everything was fine until they finished, the app then switched their gross scores around and David and Ewan appeared to have finished at 11 under….. Colin and Paul left distraught but much like a few weeks ago the error was corrected and they were crowned champions. Well done both. Fortunately Colin brought the trophy back so it can now be engraved.

Coming up we have the re-arranged Par event on the Kings next Saturday. If anyone doesn’t know how a Par event works then you can look it up online or just play it as a Stableford.

Following that we have a Stableford on the Queens. If anyone doesn’t know how a stableford works then just put your gross score into the app and it will work it out for you :)

We are also taking entries for our Winter Fourball (best ball, teams of two) knockout via the Future Comps tab on the app. Please put your partners name in the comments or leave it blank if you would like me to pair you up. Completed teams will go into the draw in the KO section of the app and the draw will take place shortly before the Dinner Dance on November 5th.
