Results Update -Muirfield Salver - Dundonald Links
Ideal weather conditions set the stage for a splendid day of golf, though the course itself presented a formidable test, primarily due to its expansive, undulating greens and deep bunkers.
The day began with Ken Marshall teeing off in the first group, achieving a commendable 33 points and claiming the top spot at the clubhouse for a period. However, Colin Campbell soon edged ahead with 34 points, albeit only holding the top spot for a brief 10-minute stint.
In the following group, Stewart Lockhart secured his place as the clubhouse leader by concluding with a par on the final hole, amassing an impressive 35 points, appearing to have a solid chance at victory.
Nonetheless, the final group had other plans…
Mark Higham initially seemed poised to clinch the competition and take home the Muirfield Salver by securing par on the 17th hole. However, his hopes were dashed by a mishap on the challenging 18th meaning he would ultimately fall one short of his playing partner and defending champion….Alan Black.
Alan showed some of his best form of the season to win last weeks Roy Nicholson Salver, having also pipped Mark Higham on the count back 7 days prior.
It would seem that Mr Black had no sympathy for Mark as he would also force him into second place once again by making par on the last two holes which supported the two birdies he made on 11 and 14.
Honourable mentions have to go to Kevin Beattie, Richard Bateman and Michael page, who although were not leading the competition, all would have looked like they had a chance of competing for one of the prizes.
Congratulations on the win, Allan and also well played to Mark and Stewart for taking second and third places.
Thanks go to everyone who helped make the event a success and to Craig Scott and Kevin Dickson for generously donating additional prizes for the winners.
On Saturday, September 2nd, we will be competing for the Muirfield Salver at Dundonald Links, which is the host venue for the Scottish Ladies Open
Below is the draw for the event along with some information on the trophy that we are playing for.
Please note that there is no specific dress code for the event, so you can wear your usual golf attire and there is no need a jacket and tie at the venue
After the event, we will provide some commentary, although it may not be as thorough and informative as the previous guest reporter, Mr. Lambert
The Muirfield Salver first awarded in 1969: The Club for many years had an annual outing to Muirfield which started in 1961 at the suggestion of the Captain Dr. Robert Dick and the Muirfield Salver was later presented to the Club by the then Vice Captain W B G Mitchell in 1969.
The first winner of the trophy was W R M Hally (Mike). The trophy is very unusual as it is more of a tray than a salver and is of African origin made from African coinage beaten together in such a way as to form a tray.
There is an African inscription on the back of the tray along with the winner’s names. The salver was presented to the winner of competition played over that course usually in medal format but later Stableford format was introduced. The annual outing to Muirfield ceased after 2009, some 48 years after it started, the trophy is now played for over differing venues
