Spring Meeting. Kings Saturday May 18th. White Tee Medal.

Perfect golfing weather.

We were blessed with amazing weather and a course which is just about to become very good for our Spring Meeting this morning. Good scores were expected but many struggled, most blaming the heat….. which isn’t something you hear too often in our events!

Maybe those who started early when it was still cool had an advantage? The scores would suggest that might have played a part as the best 2 nett scores and two of the top 3 gross scores all came from the first few groups.

The gross prize was closely contested for a change with our usual winner David Logie only tying for second with Jon Cooper, both were pipped by one shot by Al Cantlay who claims his first title. Congratulations Al.

The nett prize was a different story. Kevin Dickson was out first and must have thought his nett 65 might be good enough but playing right behind him namesake Johnny finally produced the round that we knew he was capable of and his 61 was just what the doctor ordered…. sorrry…. but well done Jonny, the first of many I suspect.

It was also nice to see two of our newer members Ian Fisher and Tariq Ali putting in decent scores and gaining some order of merit points.

The main prize is the best two from three so unlike next week’s Stroke Play Event if you had a bad day today it doesn’t really matter.

Disappointingly 4 people didn’t make their tee time, two of them let me know but the other two didn’t. This left one member playing by himself. Fortunately he was able to join another group but this is unacceptable and not what we expect from Dun Whinny members. If you are not able to play for whatever reason then please let the organiser and your playing partners know. Phoning the starter or withdrawing from the Tee Booking system (which is not a real booking, just a way to communicate your tee time) is not good enough!

The leading scores are below and all scores can be seen on the Scottish Golf app and website.

This weekend we have the first of our annual meetings and this one is also our May monthly medal. The best 2 from 3 scratch and handicap scores over the 3 Meetings wins a trophy - see History below. The next ones are on August 3rd and September 21st, both also on the Kings.

The best scratch and nett scores in our monthly medals wins a Dun Whinny whisky tumbler.

Entry is via the app as usual, the current draw is below but please check back as it WILL change:

History: The Championship Cup First Played in 1936 This is the original trophy of the Club and presented to Dun Whinny by John C Dougal one of the instigators and founders of the Club. The cup is a beautiful trophy on a stem supported by three silver golf clubs and mounted on a plinth with silver bands recording the names of all the winners. The Trophy was initially presented for stroke play competition in the Spring Meeting of 1936. At the AGM in 1937 it was decided that this trophy should be named the "Club Championship Trophy" and would be awarded to the player with the aggregate of the two best net scores in the Spring, Summer and Autumn meetings. The qualification conditions for this trophy have never been changed since that date. The first winner of the trophy was Dennis Blanc who scored 72-1 = 71

The Duncrub Trophy First Played in 1976 In 1976 Lord Rollo expressed a wish to provide a trophy to the Club for scratch competition. The Council decided that as there was already trophy for handicap competition (the Championship Cup) this trophy should be awarded for the two best scratch scores in the Spring, Summer and Autumn meetings each year. The trophy is an unusual silver plated inkstand decorated with crossed golf clubs and two silver balls as ink wells and the whole supported on three small silver balls. The names initially were inscribed on the inkstand but when no space was left an attractive hardwood stand was made on which the trophy is mounted. Lord Rollo was one of Dun Whinny's many characters and in his later years only played golf if he could be first off the tee in the morning and played mostly with Ian Donaldson. The first winner of this trophy was R M Robertson.
