The Jack Adams Trophy

The weather and course conditions for today’s Jack Adams Stableford from the yellow tees on the Queens was PERFECT. You couldn’t get a better day to play golf anywhere.

As with most of our Wednesday events the field was spread throughout the day with the first group teeing off at 8am and the last at 5.50pm. For some reason this always seems to make the event really exciting and yet again it produced a nail biter which turned into the closest competition in recent Dun Whinny history with probably around a dozen people thinking they could have won!

First out at 8am serial Queens winner and pre tournament favourite Douglas Hamilton opened up with a solid 19 points on his front nine which looked ominous for everyone else as he normally scores over 20 on the back. Strangely he eased up over the last 6 and only managed 31 which allowed his playing partner Colin Campbell, who finished with 3 pars, to overtake him and set the initial target of 34.

40 minutes behind Ken Marshall was also going well and had 31 points with 3 to go but couldn’t handle the pressure and only managed 2 more . In the same group David Logie started slowly but came back in 32 to set a new target of 35 points.

The next group went out at 2.30 and as with the first two groups two of the four players got into a decent position. Stewart Lockhart finished strongly to get 34 points and Mike Cantlay finished slightly better to tie David’s 35 points.

Four more groups went out in the club times of 5pm onwards. First up last weeks winner Rob Simpson needed to par the last to tie the lead but made a bogey to join the group on 34. Playing in the next group club Secretary, Vice Captain and Senior Champion Frank Johnson was looking good with 28 points after 14 holes but couldn’t finish it off and also joined the 34 points gang. Playing partner David Watt also made a move but came up short and also joined the group on 34.

Keeping a low profile in the same group Neil Lock had spotted that no-one actually wanted to win this and made his move, finishing birdie, birdie, par, par to also come back in 32, get to 36 points and steal the trophy Well done Neil.
